Highly Optimized Passive Lubrication System for an EV Transmission
Presentation by Dr. Milos Stanic, nanoFluidX Product Manager at Altair.

Optimising the rotational losses of an EV transmission is essential to improve range. Whilst bearing and gear losses are well understood, the interaction between rotating components and transmission fluid rarely exploited other than reducing lubricant viscosity. Effective methods for modelling drag and fluid transfer around a transmission have not robustly existed previously.

Converting electrical power into mechanical power to drive a fluid pump is wasteful. However, in tightly packaged EV transmissions where thermal cooling is limited it is essential to manage the lubricant. A novel method for passively moving fluid around an EV transmission with low losses has been developed. The system uses existing components in the gearbox to move fluid in a controlled manner. The cost savings of using this technology can be used directly elsewhere to improve vehicle range.

In order to iterate through potential design solutions a suitable computer based modelling approach had to be developed. A new smoothed particle hydrodynamics approach was created to predict the fluid movement and the drag level on the remaining components. A correlation of this approach was carried out with real world testing to prove its validity.

Overview of MDO & Methodologies for Meeting the Challenges for Efficient MDO Execution
Presentation by Dr. Royston Jones, Executive VP, European Operations & Global CTO at Altair.

As products increase in complexity, design becomes more multi-disciplinary and the requirement to efficiently deploy Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) becomes a significant design differentiator. Increasingly, industry is successfully performing MDO studies to achieve optimized balanced design allowing trade-offs between mass, performance and even cost.

In order to impact the product development process, MDO results must deliver to project timescales and in order to achieve this, a number of challenges need to be overcome. Typical challenges consist of efficiently performing MDO pre- and post-processing and solution activities. To meet these challenges, Altair has utilized its expertise in model management, large dataflow, job submittal, optimization and visualization, leveraging HyperWorks technologies to create a vertically integrated end-to-end process software tool.

Defining Positioning System for Heavy Lift Barge with AcuSolve
Presentation by Pawel Sadowski, Technical Support Manager at DES ART.

This leads to some unique, futuristic structures or some additional projects that have to be done and at the end are invisible. Our project of heavy lift barge contains in the second group. One part of this project was to proof that positioning system is sufficient to keep right position at the sea even during unfavorable weather conditions. For this purpose we perform numerous CFD analyses using AcuSolve. Computational cases differed in angle of flow, speed of flow and configuration of the barge. As a result of these all analyses defined working area of positioning system.

An Interview with Ben Farmer of Robot Bike Co. Discussing the Development of their R160 Bike with Altair
Robot Bike Company (RBC) is a new startup established in the UK by aerospace engineers and mountain biking enthusiasts who identified the potential of combining additive manufacturing technologies with carbon fiber to, in their own words, “create the best bike frames possible”. To deliver a customizable, lightweight, high strength bike, RBC’s frame was intended to be created from carbon fiber, a material very common in the industry. The carbon fiber tubes, as well as the bike’s other components and systems were to be joined by additively manufactured titanium ‘nodes’, manufactured based on the specification of individual riders. Altair ProductDesign’s engineering team was tasked with optimizing these joints, which included the head tube, seat post and chain stay lugs, to ensure they were as lightweight as possible and still able to withstand the forces of downhill mountain bike riding, all while being fit for the AM process.

Mahle Discuss Its Use Of The Automated Reporting Director
A close collaboration was forged between MAHLE and Altair ProductDesign to create the automated reporting solution. While Altair ProductDesign developed the code, MAHLE described the current process and reporting requirements to ensure business alignment and an effective result. Using ARD, MAHLE has successfully reduced time spent on non-engineering tasks, enabling CAE analysts to better utilize their time as engineers - yielding more analysis and better design.
